Bjerknes-like Compensation in the Wintertime North Pacific

چکیده
Observational and model evidence has been mounting that mesoscale eddies play an important role in air– sea interaction in the vicinity of western boundary currents and can affect the jet stream storm track. What is less clear is the interplay between oceanic and atmospheric meridional heat transport in the vicinity of western boundary currents. It is first shown that variability in the North Pacific, particularly in the Kuroshio Extension region, simulated by a high-resolution fully coupled version of the Community Earth SystemModel matches observations with similar mechanisms and phase relationships involved in the variability. The Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) is correlated with sea surface height anomalies generated in the central Pacific that propagate west preceding Kuroshio Extension variability with a ;3–4-yr lag. It is then shown that there is a near compensation of O(0.1) PW (PW [ 10W) between wintertime atmospheric and oceanic meridional heat transport on decadal time scales in the North Pacific. This compensation has characteristics of Bjerknes compensation and is tied to the mesoscale eddy activity in the Kuroshio Extension region.

متن کاملThe source of the midwinter suppression in storminess over the North Pacific
Lagrangian feature tracking techniques are employed to determine the cause of the midwinter suppression of the Pacific storm track. It is found that the frequency of disturbances entering the Pacific storm track from mid-latitude Asia is substantially reduced (>25%) during wintertime relative to fall and spring. In contrast, the seasonal cycle of both the amplitude and the growth rate of indivi...

Synoptic extra-tropical cyclone and anticyclone trajectories have been constructed from mean daily sea level pressure (SLP) data using a new automated scheme. Frequency, intensity and trajectory characteristics of these transients have been summarized to form indices describing wintertime cyclonic and anticyclonic activity over the North-Eastern Pacific (east of 170 W) during 1950–2001. During ...
متن کاملNorth American Drought: Reconstructions, Causes, and Consequences
Severe drought is the greatest recurring natural disaster to strike North America. A remarkable network of centuries-long annual tree-ring chronologies has now allowed for the reconstruction of past drought over North America covering the past 1,000 or more years in most regions. These reconstructions reveal the occurrence of past “megadroughts” of unprecedented severity and duration, ones t...
متن کاملNorth Pacific Climate Response to Freshwater Forcing in the Subarctic North Atlantic: Oceanic and Atmospheric Pathways
Sudden changes of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) are believed to have caused large, abrupt climate changes over many parts of the globe during the last glacial and deglacial period. This study investigates the mechanisms by which a large freshwater input to the subarctic North Atlantic and an attendant rapid weakening of the AMOC influence North Pacific climate by analyz...
